School Uniform

 We have a school dress code to ensure that pupils arrive at school suitably dressed for a day at Fred Nicholson School. We believe that uniform creates a common identity among pupils and fosters a sense of belonging.

We ask our parents to support us by providing an appropriate school uniform as follows:

  • White polo shirt, shirt or blouse
  • Grey or black trousers, dress or skirt 
  • Low heeled black shoes or trainers 
  • FNS sweatshirt or cardigan or royal blue sweatshirt or cardigan

Year 11 pupils may wear a distinctive sweatshirt or jumper of a colour chosen by the whole year group. This colour may vary from year to year.

Sixth form students can wear casual clothes and footwear that appropriately support the activities they are accessing in their timetable. Please note, ripped jeans and tops are not acceptable.

PE Kit 

Children must be provided with a change of clothing for PE and games. Parents will be informed when their child is swimming and they will be informed of any special requirements for games. 

For PE and physical activity, our pupils wear: 

Forest Schools 

Parents will be informed when their child is accessing Forest Schools or other outdoor learning activities as part of their timetable. Children must be provided with a change of clothing suitable to learning outside in a variety of weather conditions. 

Jewellery 

Jewellery is discouraged due to Health and Safety reasons and the school does not accept responsibility for the safe keeping of possessions.  

Watches may be worn and for those with pierced ears, one stud earring only may be worn. However, pupils must be able to independently remove their watch or earrings for any physical activities undertaken during the school day.  

Mobile Phones 

We recognise that some of our pupils have a long way to travel and parents like to be able to contact them on the home/school transport.  

We ask pupils to hand their phones in to their class team on arrival to school as we do not allow mobile phones in school. Phones are kept in a secure cupboard within their classroom and returned to pupils at the end of the day before returning to transport or parents. If pupils refuse to hand in their phones, they may be confiscated and parents asked to collect them. 

We ask that pupils do not exchange telephone numbers with each other without written consent from parents/carers. 

Other Valuables 

A valuable can be considered anything that the child or parent would be upset at the loss of or damage to. On past experiences this includes: 

Where it is agreed a pupil may bring in a specific item for an activity, this should be handed in at the School Office at the beginning of the day for safe keeping. 

Lost Property 

The School Office holds the lost property. Where possible they will be returned to the child. Please ensure any clothing or items sent into school are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
